EFFECT OF PLANNED POST-PRACTICAL DISCUSSION ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF PRACTICALS SKILLS ACQUISITION IN PHYSICS

LASISI A. R. & MRS T.A. DANIEL,

Abstract
This study investigates the effect of planned post-practical discussion on senior secondary school students’ level of practical skills acquisition in physics. A pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental approach was employed for the study. The subjects of the study were twenty-five senior secondary two (SS II) students. Experimental group were made up of thirteen students while control group were made up of twelve students. Both groups were exposed to the same set of Physics experiments using the same demonstration method of teaching except that the experimental group experienced planned post practical discussion at the end of each practical lesson. Three standard test items selected from West African Examination Council (WAEC) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) Physics paper I was administer as pre-test and post-test. Physics practical skills rating scale (PPSRS) was used to assess the participants’ responses. The data obtained were analyzed using t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study reveals that students who were exposed to planned post-laboratory discussion had a significant mean gain in level of practical skills acquisition as measured by PPSRS. Thus, it was suggested that physics (science) teachers should integrate planned post-practical discussion to their teaching strategies in physics (science) practical. This implies that there should be constant in-service training in form of workshop for science teachers to acquit them with latest research findings that can improve their teaching strategies. It is therefore recommended that teachers should be exposed to in-service training in the use of planned post-practical discussion model of teaching.

THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION TRANSFORMATION AS A DRIVE FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA

ISAH Shehu Nabara

Abstract
The Agricultural Transformation is all about enhancing capacity for agricultural commodity value chains leading to industrialization and employment creation, food security, infrastructure investments, private sector leadership, supportive fiscal policies and accessible market information systems to the farmers. Poor funding and absence of a well-defined agricultural extension policy among others will constitute a challenge for extension as she delivers in the transformation. True commitment by the government to the newly established Federal Department of Agricultural Extension (FDAE) and proper funding of the Nigerian extension service could be employed as strategies for restructuring extension service in the on-going Transformation, for a true and sustainable food sufficiency. The following recommendations are made: (1) the Federal Government must be honest with the transformation by being supportive and giving the newly established Federal Department of Agricultural Extension (FDAE) free hand to oversee, monitor and provide the leadership needed for an efficient and effective agricultural extension and advisory service delivery in Nigeria; (2) relevant bodies should review the Agricultural extension policies within the subsisting Agricultural policies and recommend appropriate policies that will ensure the effective participation of all stakeholders in a stable policy environment.

EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY FOR MANAGING CLIMATIC CONSTRAINTS IN NIGERIAN CROP PRODUCTION

OKWORI, A. A. and IDOGAH, E. E. (Mrs)

Abstract
Human survival without food crops is myth. Whereas, crop culture is the basic activity by which humans and animals survive, crop itself depends on light, heat, water, air, climatic factors. Undoubtedly, climate has a lot of influence on crops such that climatic and its’ change constraints on them in way of dryness and heat stress persist till now. This research investigated such issues and stipulated some technology for managing the climatic constraints in Nigerian crop production as follows: utilizing technology of polythene house provides considerable protection to crops against cool soil; and creating wind shelter and break belts which possess tree shade and decrease heat load of radiation because they lower wind speed and transpiration. Adopt genetic development of drought-adapted crop and animal varieties, dry farming, improved irrigation facility farming and rain creation. It’s to possess modern technology for exploring new areas of agricultural production.

Keywords: Climate change, drought, heat injury; management technology, and cow production.
